We journeyed across the country to #BrandtheBarn – 40 barns to be exact. It was a massive and colorful effort to mark the Certified Angus Beef ® brand’s 40th anniversary. Along the way, we met wonderful people who shared stories, memories and a way of life that left us in awe. While it’s true that the kitchen is the heart of the home, for rural folks it is the barn that’s the heart of a family.
Rob and Lori Thomas own and manage Thomas Angus Ranch in Baker City, Oregon. The ranch is situated between two mountain ranges in the eastern portion of the state. Son Tyler and daughter Bryson, as well as a great crew of employees, help the Thomases care for the ranch and cattle.
The ranch was started in 1950 when Bob Thomas, Rob’s father, purchased one cow and one bull. Bob set out to learn as much as he could about the Angus breed, which lead him to take jobs with farms in New York before he moved to the West Coast. Today, the Thomas family’s ranch is home to over 900 cows in the picturesque Baker Valley.
